In 2026, the “suddenlies” of technology have arrived. AI is no longer a futuristic concept in PR; it is the invisible teammate handling our media research, drafting our first takes, and monitoring sentiment in real-time. But as the efficiency of AI reaches its peak, we face a new challenge: The Paradox of Polished Content.
When every brand can generate “perfect” copy at the touch of a button, perfection becomes a commodity. As a PR practitioner, I’ve realized that our greatest competitive advantage isn't how fast we can produce, but how deeply we can connect. In an age of infinite automated outreach, humanity is our moat.
Best Practice for the AI Era
To embrace the benefits of AI without losing our soul, we must follow a “Human-in-the-Loop” philosophy:
- • Use AI for the Grunt Work, Not the Heart Work: Allow AI summarise the data and map the trends, but never let it define the “why.” Strategy and taste cannot be automated.
- • The Sincerity Filter: Before any AI-assisted communication goes live, ask: Does this sound like a partner, or a program? We must lean into “imperfect” human nuances—original points of view and personal anecdotes—that AI simply cannot replicate.
- • Radical Transparency: Integrity in 2026 means being open about when we use AI. Trust is built when clients know that while technology accelerates our research, a human mind is driving the strategy.
The Value of the In-Person “Suddenly”
Perhaps the most important tip I can share is this: Digital efficiency should never replace physical presence. In a world of avatars and LLMs, the most powerful PR tool remains the ability to look a customer, a journalist, or a partner in the eye. A face-to-face meeting builds a “relationship bank” that no algorithm can hack. It is in the spontaneous coffee dates and the firm handshakes where true loyalty is forged.
As we navigate this year, let’s use AI to give us back our time—not so we can do more “work,” but so we can spend more time being truly present with the people who make our businesses possible.
A note on integrity: I used AI to help me structure and polish these thoughts, but the heartbeat behind them—and the lessons learned standing firm during a recent family crisis—are 100% mine. This is how we work at Kerry Botha Communications: leveraging the best of the future to protect the values of the present.
